Smrz goes quickest at home circuit
Jakub Smrz on the Effenbert-Liberty Racing Team Ducati set the quickest time in the opening practice session in front of his home crowd at the Brno circuit.

The Czech rider edged Max Biaggi (Aprilia Alitalia Racing Team) off the top slot right at the end of the session, the gap between them at the end just 0.171 of a second.

Third place went to Marco Melandri (Yamaha World Superbike Team), the Italian also at ease on the Czech Republic track. Behind Melandri can be found Michel Fabrizio (Suzuki Alstare) and the other Effenbert-Liberty Racing Ducati in the hands of Sylvain Guintoli.

Points leader Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) was seventh quickest, in between a Leon sandwich of Camier (Aprilia Alitalia Racing Team) in sixth and Haslam (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) in eighth.

Britain's James Toseland (BMW Motorrad Italia SBK Team), back after his recent injury, tiptoed to 18th quickest time, while Chris Vermeulen (Kawasaki Racing Team) crashed on his out-lap and again banged his left elbow.
